Gay and Lesbian.
Krakow is a far cry from other European metropolises such as Amsterdam, London or Berlin when it comes to the tolerance and acceptance of homosexual living.
Staunch catholic heritage and years behind the iron curtain have contributed to society's inherent antagonism towards gays and lesbians. Abuse – both verbal and physical – has been reported even in the more progressive cities of the country.
Despite the hostility, the gay rights movement is strong and gay friendly venues can be found in a number of major cities. While in some Polish towns marches and events have been banned, Krakow's Mayor has allowed, and openly supported, the Culture of Tolerance Festival to take place as a yearly event in his city. The festival includes: exhibitions, film screenings, seminars, art workshops and club events.
