Etiquette.
In today’s global economy cultural awareness is a must. When doing business in Poland or even if you just plan to visit for an extended period of time, it is essential to learn a little about the expected customs and etiquette of the country.
When you meet someone for the first time it is usual to shake hands firmly. Commonly, a woman is kissed on the cheek 2-3 times but not when first introduced. Strangers are addressed as “Pan” – Mr. – followed by their surname and women “Pani” – Mrs. – until permission is given to use their first names.
An invitation to dinner at home is considered an honour in family oriented Poland. When one is invited to dinner it is imperative that they arrive on time. Some households take off their shoes before entering the house --this will be obvious if the family are wearing slippers and there is a line of shoes outside the door. Politics and money should not be discussed at the dinner table.
When visiting someone’s home it is polite to bring a gift – a bunch of flowers and a bottle of wine are usual. Don’t bring a bottle of vodka as this is considered cheap. Gifts are also exchanged in business – particularly when starting a new business relationship.
In business, it is common to swap business cards. To make a good impression, it is recommendable to have one side of your business card printed in Polish.
