Security.
Considered one of the safest cities in Poland, Krakow can be enjoyed without too much concern for personal safety.
But like most cities with a high influx of tourists, Krakow has seen an increase in petty crime in correlation with its increase in number of visitors laden with fat wallets, mobile phones and laptops. Muggings are rare but pickpockets are rampant. Honey-pots for the average pickpocketer in Krakow are found in and around public transportation buildings, on crowded public buses, trams and trains.
Car theft in Krakow, as in the rest of Poland, is rife. Organised gangs operate throughout the country, stealing cars and selling them in Russia and the Ukraine. Targeted vehicles include SUVs, minivans and luxury cars. It is important to safe-guard your car against theft by not leaving it in remote places and preferably parking in guarded car parks. Remember not to leave anything of value in your car.
House burglaries do occur in Krakow but many of these break-ins occur due to careless home security e.g. leaving the house doors unlocked, open or poorly secured windows and forgetting to close the garage door.
The Polish state police provide an English and German language phone service for visitors whose personal security has been violated. This service also helps those who require information on public safety and safe travel.
