Mayor.
The Mayor of Krakow, locally referred to as the President of the City, is Jacek Majchrowski. The President is responsible for the management of the city's own and entrusted estate, organization and functioning of the city office, security and public order, civil defence, crisis situations as well as the promotion and marketing of the city. The executive power lies with the City President who is elected by the people for a four year tenure.
In 2006 Majchrowksi, former professor of law and author of several historical books, was re-elected for a second term. As President of Krakow he has successfully increased revenues of the city and has dramatically changed the face of the tourism industry by pioneering a cooperation with low-fare airlines. He can also be accredited with the resuscitation of the most important historic area in the city – the Market Square – as well as the establishment of multifunctional sports fields, indoor swimming pools and large recreational complexes.
Despite being famously left out of the welcoming ceremonies for President George W. Bush during his visit to Krakow in 2003, the unhindered Majchrowski continued to be openly critical of Poland's participation in the war in Iraq and the national government's ardent support of the Bush administration.
