Running from 5am until 11pm, Krakow's well integrated public transport system is very easy and inexpensive to use. Although sometimes overcrowded, trams and buses throughout the city are efficient and, more importantly, reliable.
Tickets, valid on both buses and trams, can be bought from kiosks, MPK ticket centres or from ticket machines at tram stops in the city centre. You can, of course, buy a ticket from the driver but this will be slightly more expensive. A single ticket from a kiosk or ticket machine costs 2,50 PLN – 0,65 EUR and from the driver it costs 3,00 PLN – about 0,79 EUR. Remember – a single journey ticket does not extend to larger pieces of luggage, these cost more.
There are different types of tickets available for purchase:
- A single trip – allows a one way journey without transfers
- Night ticket – allows a one way journey by night bus without transfers
- Group ticket – 15-20 people unlimited travel for one hour -- invalid on night buses
- 24-hour ticket – unlimited travel on trams, buses and night buses
- 48-hour ticket – unlimited travel on trams, buses and night buses
- 72-hour ticket – unlimited travel on trams, buses and night buses
It is important that you purchase the correct ticket for your intended journey and it is essential to ensure that the ticket is punched for validation, in one of the orange boxes, upon boarding the bus or tram. Failure to do so can result in the unpleasant experience of an on-the-spot fine of 100 PLN – about 26 EUR.
